Managing Constipation and Upset Stomach on GLP-1s

July 31, 2024

GLP-1 treatments are a game-changer for patients with diabetes and those on a weight management journey. That being said, like any medication, they aren’t without their side effects. One of the most common side effects for GLP-1 patients is constipation and other GI issues like upset stomach and diarrhea. Luckily, life on GLP-1s can be great when you find the dosage, lifestyle adjustments, and routines that minimize or completely eliminate these side effects.

In this article, we’ll explore why GLP-1s can cause constipation and other gastrointestinal issues and how you can manage these side effects and get relief.

Why Can GLP-1s Cause Gastrointestinal Irregularities?

Part of the way GLP-1 agonists work is by slowing down the digestive process — this helps you stay full longer and therefore eat less frequently. This helps patients eat fewer meals while remaining satisfied, but it can also cause other side effects.

This process is known as delayed gastric emptying and it can affect the entire digestive tract. Delayed gastric emptying can reduce the frequency and speed of peristaltic movements in the intestines, which can slow down the transit time for food and waste, and may lead to constipation.

How to Combat Constipation and Diarrhea on GLP-1s

One of the most effective ways to regulate your gastrointestinal health while on GLP-1s is by taking proactive measures. If you’re experiencing constipation or diarrhea try:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Working with your doctor to experiment with different dosages and routines
  • Keeping a food diary to understand potential triggers
  • Asking your doctor if fiber supplements or laxatives may help you

If you’re constipated, then you can try getting additional fiber in your diet. Conversely, limit fiber-filled foods when you’re experiencing bouts of diarrhea. Additionally, try eating slowly and having smaller meals to help your body adjust to digestion on GLP-1s.

If you’re experiencing gastrointestinal side effects while on GLP-1s, you don’t have to suffer. Talk with your doctor about remedies, lifestyle changes, or dosage changes that can make your GLP-1 side effects more manageable.
